How distressing it is to get out of bed each morning, feeling tired due to lack of sleep because of work depression. Once you reach that stage you need to recognise that you are no longer in control your career direction anymore. It’s time to do something about it.
Have you lost interest in the things you do? Has work become boring? Is your job getting out of control? Do you sometimes feel trapped – wanting to get out of your career but scared of unforeseen events if you give up on it and choose the things you want to do? I suspect you are suffering from job burnout.
Job burnout can be caused by several situations including unmet expectations, stress and overwork. But many experts believe that job burnout is caused by being in the wrong career.
If you feel like you are experiencing job burnout, then it is important that you do something about it before it causes serious damage in your life. Recognise the signs and seek help. Here are some things you can do to get you started:
- Identify your needs and understand what you really want to do in your career. Job hopping will get you nowhere. You will only get stuck in limbo, unable to move forward, and your issues will never be solved. Firstly, you need to reflect on what it is that has caused the burnout. If it is work, then do you want a new job or do you want to stay but seek a different role? If you want a completely new career, you should also consider its implications. Will your family’s financial needs still be met?
- Have some “me” time. While it is important to work hard, you also need to relax, get some time off and focus on yourself. Break from work during weekends, have an early morning walk, and pamper yourself once in a while.
- If you are ready to make a career change, then prepare for it. If deep within you really believes that the only solution to your burnout is a change of career then go for it, but first you need to prepare for it.
